Canada’s C$4.4-billion plan to cope with a poisonous legacy at a former gold mine in the Northwest Territories risks complicating local efforts to find a permanent solution. Ottawa is moving ahead with efforts to freeze a 237,000-tonne underground pile of arsenic trioxide dust for at least 100 years at the former Giant mine in Yellowknife, said Natalie Plato, a federal government official in charge of the cleanup. As permafrost thaws, officials see the method as the best way to minimize risks that the waste – a byproduct of gold mining that could fill seven 11-storey buildings and kill humanity several times over – could leak into water systems. The strategy has…

The Canadian dollar is showing little movement at the start of the week. In the European session, USD/CAD is trading at 1.3820, down 0.06% on the day. Canada's employment sinks Canada's labor market is deteriorating quickly. In August, employment slipped by 65.5 thousand, the sharpest decline since January 2022. This was well off the market estimate of a 7.5 thousand gain and following the July reading of -40.8 thousand. That's the loss of over 100 thousand jobs in just two months. The massive loss of jobs has been driven by the US-Canada trade war, as many Canadian products have been slapped with 35% tariffs. There was more bad news, as the unemployment rate jumped…

The Canadian government has approved the $53-billion Anglo Teck mega-merger, clearing the way for the creation of one of the world’s largest copper producers as global demand for the metal accelerates. Although industry minister Mélanie Joly greenlit the merger on national security grounds in November, lawmakers still needed to conclude that the deal would deliver a net economic benefit to Canada under tightened takeover rules. That sparked negotiations over legally binding commitments from Anglo American. Those include moving the company’s headquarters to Vancouver from London and investing at least C$4.5 billion ($3.2bn) in Canada over five years, rising to a mi…

Canada has fined Cryptomus an eye-watering $126 million for breaking the country’s anti-money laundering rules. Cryptomus, officially registered as Xeltox Enterprises Ltd and based in Vancouver, reportedly failed to report thousands of suspicious transactions, including ones potentially linked to serious crimes such as child exploitation, ransomware, and sanctions evasion. In July 2024 alone, Cryptomus chose not to report over 1,000 instances of suspicious activity and more than 1,500 reports on large crypto transactions. Canada’s financial watchdog, Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada (FINTRAC), announced the penalty on 22 October 2025 and said…

Log in to today's North American session Market wrap for October 8 Today's session saw the continuation of the weekly flows, with the US Dollar higher and Gold breaking new milestones. The US-Canada deal seems to be getting closer from the recent remarks made by Canada's Carney. US Equities sparked a huge reversal higher with both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closing at record highs, yet again. Nothing really explained yesterday's risk-off session, therefore dip buyers just came and bought things back. The Dow remains a lagger throughout this week after showing just a wick above the 47,000 threshold. In geopolitics, Trump mentioned in a roundtable talk that Middle East …

Joly confirmed that Ottawa will assess the deal under the Investment Canada Act and issue a final decision in the coming months, saying from South Korea that the security review is a standard step in evaluating foreign transactions but that the government expects stronger long-term commitments to Canada. The national security review, under the Investment Canada Act, will examine how the transaction could affect critical minerals and related supply chains. Copp…

The deal, potentially covering 10 years, could be part of a broader approach to nuclear energy and economic collaboration between the two countries, the Globe reported Tuesday, citing unidentified people familiar with the matter. It would replace a previous $350 million, five-year agreement signed in 2015. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, agreed this weekend to hold talks aimed at reac…
