The US Supreme Court declined on Tuesday to hear an appeal by the Apache Stronghold seeking to block the development of the Resolution Copper mine in Arizona. The mine is a joint venture between Rio Tinto (ASX, LON, NYSE: RIO) and BHP (ASX: BHP). The advocacy group, comprising members of the San Carlos Apache tribe of southeastern Arizona and conservationists, challenged a 2024 lower court decision that permitted a federal land swap allowing the mining companies to acquire land considered sacred by the Apache for the mine project. A federal judge in Arizona had temporarily halted the land transfer on May 9, pending the outcome of the Supreme Court appeal. The …

Overview: While the US dollar is a little softer today against the G10 currencies, it remains mostly within Wednesday's range. The yen is a notable exception. It made a new high for the week despite the contraction in Q1 25 GDP. Most emerging market currencies are firmer. The markets have not reacted to a statement from President Trump that his administration lacks the capacity to negotiate with all the parties so in the next 2-3 weeks, the US will simply set the tariff rates. Asia Pacific equities ended the week on a mixed note. Europe's Stoxx 600 is up about 0.6%, the fourth daily advance this week. US index futures are up about 0.25%. European bonds are rallying. The …

Overview: There is one driver today. The US Court of International Trade ruled against the Trump administration's "Liberation Day" tariffs. The court rules that the 1977 law used to justify the actions did not apply. The ruling also applies to the earlier tariffs on security of the US borders and fentanyl trafficking. The dollar initially rallied but is now more mixed, with the dollar bloc and Scandis firmer on the day. Emerging market currencies have not recovered as well, but after the Russian ruble, the South African rand, Mexican peso, and Chinese yuan are making advances. Equities mostly like the development, but the Trump administration will appeal. Taiwan and Indi…

Overview: The US and China struck an agreement that would lower tariffs for a 90-day cooling off period. The US tariff on China falls to 30% from 145%, while China's tariff on the US falls to 10% from 125%. A new forum was established to allow recurring discussions on economics and trade. The dollar spiked sharply higher on the news but was quickly sold into the rally, and while it remains sharply higher on the day, it is well off its peak. The Japanese yen is weakest of the G10 currencies, and it is off about in late European morning turnover. The Australian dollar, sometimes treated as a G10 proxy for China, is down the least, less than 0.15%. Most emerging markets in …

Overview: There are five developments to note. First, the US and China will have initial trade talks this weekend in Switzerland. Second, the PBOC cut its key rate by 10 bp and cut reserve requirements by 0.5%. It also announced several other measures to boost lending/relending. Third, German factory orders were stronger than expected, perhaps bolstered by attempts to move ahead of US tariffs. Fourth, after last week’s ruction, most Asian emerging market currencies continued to pullback. The exceptions today were the South Korean won and Philippine peso. Fifth, there has been little market impact from India and Pakistan exchanging strikes. The Indian rupee is weaker (~0.5…

USDCAD had seen a decent rebound from last week lows, starting the week at 1.36850. It was a generally positive week for the US Dollar and a relatively muted one for the Loonie. A lack of key economic data before this morning led to some recovery in the USD, particularly as earnings came in overall better than expected. We just received the report for the Core PCE Data which came in as expected, at 2.5% Y/Y. This piece of data is what the FED wants to see to resume the cut cycle that had began in September 2024, taking the Effective FED Funds Rate (The main US Policy rate) from 5.50% to the current 4.25%. The last 25 bps cut was done in December 2024. The Bank of Can…

Another day where markets hang on to a positive sentiment following a similar picture from yesterday - risk-assets are in the green and safe-havens are lagging on the day. The US dollar as recently shines on optimist flows from markets, though as the DXY is still trading below the 100.00 level. The Greenback is leading today's forex action. On the other hand, the Yen is not showing such a rosy picture. Comments from the Minister of Finance Katsunobu Kato about reducing the issuance on long-end bonds made Japanese yields go down and the Yen got dragged with it. How do yields moving down influence the Yen? For a quick-to-understand explanation, lon…

The Bitcoin price has not had quite the same spark it did at the beginning of the last month so far in June. The premier cryptocurrency has somewhat struggled to break out of a consolidation range since reaching a new all-time high in the month of May. The Bitcoin price recently succumbed to bearish pressure, falling to around $101,000 on Friday, June 6. While the market leader has enjoyed some resurgence to begin the weekend, a prominent blockchain firm has now identified significant levels in the event of a return to the $100,000 level in the coming days. Here Are The Next Support Levels For BTC In a June 6 post on the social media platform X, crypto analytics firm Se…

Singapore-based WazirX is shifting its base to Panama after local courts ruled against its restructuring plan. The crypto exchange announced the court’s decision via a post on X on 4 June 2025. In an email shared with its user base, WazirX detailed recently redacted documents revealing Zettai, WazirX’s parent company, will move to Panama and rebrand itself in the region. The document read, “Zettai has taken steps to incorporate a subsidiary, Zensui Corporation, in the Republic of Panama, and has been preparing for the transfer of the operations of the Platform’s cryptocurrency-related services to Zensui.” This news comes in the wake of Singapore’s central bank mandatin…

President Trump says there are trade talks with China. Beijing denies it. Around the time the US reports that the world's largest economy contracted slightly in Q1 (0.3% annualized), US Treasury Secretary Bessent said that the effective embargo was shutting down the China's economy. The week ended with China's Commerce Ministry statement that it was evaluating US overtures for trade talks, which implies the US caved, as the psych-ops continue. Trump and Bessent's call for lower interest rates will get little attention for the Federal Reserve. With a decent jobs report in hand, the Fed has no incentive to either cut rates or signal that it is preparing to cut. The uncertai…

Between its trade war and the "big, beautiful budget", which is both regressive and adds on more debt, the US has roiled the capital markets. Before the weekend, the US said the EU was not negotiating in good faith. President Trump threatened a 50% tariff as of June 1. This looks harsher than the current state of play with China. Europe's Stoxx 600 was sold, and it suffered its biggest loss since April. He also called for a 25% tariff on Apple and Samsung smartphones. Benchmark 10-year yields fell 5-8 bp. The euro itself dropped about two-thirds of a cent but recovered to settled around 0.7% higher on the day and posted its first weekly gain since the week ending April 18…

The dollar traded choppily last week but settled higher against all the G10 currencies. It finished the week on a firm note. The messy upside correction for the dollar may continue. Despite disappointing retail sales and manufacturing output, and softer than expected CPI and PPI, the market has pushed the next Fed cut into Q4 from Q3. Most of the other G10 central banks will likely (again) cut before the Federal Reserve. Halfway through the quarter, the Atlanta Fed's GDPNow Tracker has Q2 growth at 2.4%, which if accurate, would probably be the best in the G10. Still the 90-day reduction of US (and Chinese) punitive tariffs has seen shipment orders surge, and imports, wit…

Many seemed optimistic that the weekend trade talks between the US and China will de-escalate the tension. We are less sanguine. Even if the tariffs on both sides were halved, there would still be an effective bilateral embargo. In the larger picture we are concerned that blocking PRC's exports and denying it a direct investment strategy as an alternative will ultimately not lead to significant reforms in Beijing but will strengthen nationalism and create a more determined and aggressive adversary. It was not out of affection for Berlin that Keynes warned against the bleeding of Germany after WWI. It is in a similar realpolitik vein that we encourage caution of what cou…

Last week, the US dollar fell to new lows for the year against half the G10 currencies, including sterling, the Norwegian krone, and Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand dollars. A key question is whether it is a breakout and a signal that ana acceleration of the dollar's decline is at hand. On balance, and within a larger downtrend, we think there is a better case for the dollar trade consolidate with a firmer bias in the near-term. The three-month moving average of nonfarm payrolls rose in both April and May. The unemployment rate has been steady at 4.2% for the past three months. From the Fed's vantage point, it is not signaling a new for urgent action. This will allo…

It’s 2025, and Donald Trump, the U.S. President, has a crypto wallet that looks more like it belongs to a meme-loving teenager than one of the most powerful political figures in the world. According to data from Arkham Intelligence, Trump’s crypto wallet is a strange cocktail of meme coins (mostly airdropped tokens) and a few more serious coins clinging on for dear life. Let’s start with the star of the show: Official TRUMP. As of early June, the wallet holds about 579,000 TRUMP tokens, worth roughly $102,000. That might sound impressive, until you realize those same tokens were valued at over $1.6 million in January. An 88% drop later, and things aren’t looking quite so…

XRP’s price action is currently exhibiting a back-and-forth pattern around $2.20, but an interesting technical analysis suggests it may soon leave this price level. A chart analysis posted by a crypto analyst on the social media platform X has given an interesting projection about XRP’s next move. By overlaying XRP’s current weekly chart with its explosive 2017 fractal, the analyst hints that the altcoin might be on the verge of a repeat performance that sends it far beyond its current price range. 2017 XRP Fractal Overlaid Technical analysis of XRP price action on the weekly timeframe reveals an interesting pattern that has been unfolding over multiple weeks. Powell laid out in his post-meeting press conference and what has already been echoed in recent speeches by other Fed officials. Persistent uncertainty around trade policy, risks to both sides of the Fed’s dual mandate (employment and inflation), and the ongoing debate about which side presents the greater medium-term risk are keeping the FOMC in wait-and-see mode. So far, nothing in the incoming data through early May appears to have shifted the Fed’s stance or prompted a lean toward any specific policy path. Participants agreed that with growth and the labor market remaining solid, and policy already moderately restrictive, the Fed is well positioned to stay patient. Th…

[Updated for 2025] Silver is categorized among a group of valuable commodities such as Gold, palladium, and platinum– these precious metals are valued for their inherent use case and rarity. Compared to other commodities, Silver and the rest often have constant prices, which are subject to periodic fluctuations depending on different market dynamics. Briefly, we will be looking at what Silver will be worth in 10 years. There’s been a lull in the value of precious metals like Gold and Silver for the last twelve…
