Greece has entered new territory in crypto enforcement. For the first time, authorities in the country have seized digital assets linked to a cybercrime case. The move follows a phishing attack that drained funds from a local user’s Bybit account and signals a growing ability to handle crypto-related crimes through the legal system. Background: What Happened with Bybit The case began when a Greek citizen lost more than $150,000 worth of crypto in a phishing scam targeting users of the Bybit exchange. The attacker tricked the victim into revealing login credentials, then quickly transferred the assets out and tried to bury the trail using a series of wallet hops. Source:…

Overview: The foreign exchange market is becalmed today. The greenback is in narrow ranges with a slightly softer bias against most of the G10 currencies, but the Swiss franc and Canadian dollar. The news stream is light, and the leadership of the North American market seems awaited. The US announced a new sectoral investigation into robotics, industrial machinery, and medical devices. Under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, the investigation can last 270 days. Separately, the White House budget office reportedly is preparing for large-scale permanent layoffs during a government shutdown, which looks increasingly likely. Workers deemed nonessential are typically fur…

Overview: The US dollar is beginning the new month on a firm note. It has edged higher against most currencies. Among the G10, the Australian dollar and Norwegian krone are leading the pack with negligible gains. Among emerging market currencies, the Mexican peso's gain of around 0.15% puts its atop the complex. The news stream is light and mostly features the final manufacturing PMI reading. OPEC+ agreed to boost output by 137k barrels a day next month and then hold for Q1 26. December WTI is little changed now. It initially extended the pre-weekend gains to $61.50 but sellers pressed it back below $61.00. China adjusted its tax on gold, seemingly encouraging purchases …

Overview: The US dollar is trading somewhat heavier against the G10 currencies but the Scandis today, ahead of the US CPI report. Most emerging market currencies are also firmer. The last few CPI readings were softer than expected, but economists continue to look for firmer price pressures. Late yesterday, the US announced a 17% tariff on imports of Mexican tomatoes but apparently has signaled approval of Nvidia selling its H20 chips to China. That decision helped lift Chinese tech stocks that trade in Hong Kong, but the CSI 300 itself managed only the most minor of gains. Most other bourses in the region rose. Europe's Stoxx 600 is posting a small gain after retreating i…

Overview: The US dollar is under pressure. The losses seen yesterday have been extended against nearly all the G10 currencies. It is also lower against all the emerging market currencies but the Turkish lira and Russian ruble. There were some murmurings the Fed cutting 50 bp next month, and Treasury Secretary Bessent suggested it may be appropriate. The Fed funds futures have almost 25 bp cut discounted but looking at some pricing in the options market, some observers are concluding the market is pricing in a small chance of such a move. US rates are softer today. The two-year Treasury yield and the 10-year yield are off 2-4 bp, though at 3.70%. The former is not below ye…

Overview: With Japanese markets closed for Mountain Day and a quiet summer Monday in Europe, activity in the foreign exchange market is subdued. It may continue in North America today, ahead of tomorrow’s CPI. Most of the G10 currencies are in narrow ranges and +/- 0.2% against the US dollar. Emerging market currencies are mostly in narrow, consolidative ranges. Equity markets are mixed. The large bourses in the Asia Pacific region were mostly higher. Notable exceptions included the index of mainland companies that trade in Hong Kong, South Korea's Kospi and Singapore's Strait Times. Europe's Stoxx 600 is straddling unchanged levels in late European morning turnover, whi…

GreenRoc Mining Plc (AIM: GROC) jumped on Tuesday after the Greenland-focused critical minerals explorer secured a 30-year exploitation licence for its Amitsoq graphite project, paving the way for its production. Greenland’s business and mineral resources minister, Naaja Nathanielsen, signed off on the licence earlier this week, marking the third such permit granted by the Arctic island this year. “(The) exploitation licence is the result of focused political efforts to make Greenland more attractive for responsible investments, while seriously taking into account the concerns for people and the environment,” Nathanielsen said in a statement. Greenland Resources (Cboe CA: MOLY)(FSE: M0LY) secured on Thursday a 30-year permit for its Malmbjerg molybdenum project, a major development backed by the European Union. The open-pit mine is expected to supply roughly 25% of the EU’s annual molybdenum demand over its first decade of operation, producing an average of 32.8 million pounds of the metal each year. Molybdenum, a silvery-white element used to strengthen steel and improve heat and corrosion resistance, is critical to sectors such as aerospace, energy and defence. China, the dominant global supplier, recently introduced export restrictions on the metal, in response to US President Donald Trump’s tariff …

Critical Metals (Nasdaq: CRML) has returned results as thick as 65 metres grading 0.55% total rare earth oxides (TREO) from surface at Tanbreez, one of the largest undeveloped heavy rare earth deposits outside China. That result in hole DDH-C-24 at the Fjord deposit in southern Greenland is top-tier and important for showing continuity in a bulk target that could support long-life production. The Tanbreez hole included 25.5% heavy rare earth oxides (HREO) and 90 parts per million (ppm) gallium oxide (Ga2O3), an important energy transition metal for its use in semiconductors, LED lights and solar panels. “These incredible results underscore the strategic value of T…

Greenland is urging the US and European nations to invest in its mining industry, cautioning that a lack of Western engagement may compel the Arctic territory to seek partnerships with China instead, says Naaja Nathanielsen, Greenland’s minister for business and mineral resources. “We want to develop our business sector and diversify it, and that requires investments from outside,” Nathanielsen said in an interview with the Financial Times on Tuesday. She emphasized a preference for collaboration with European and American partners, but noted that if they do not engage, Greenland would need to consider other options, including China. Greenland, a semi-autonomo…

Global oil markets are showing a rapidly growing supply surplus.“Oil on water” volumes have surged, signaling difficulties in placing cargoes.Sanctioned oil flows increasingly contribute to the buildup in floating storage.New sanctions on Russia may intensify oversupply pressures in the coming weeks. A clear supply-side pressure is emerging in the global oil market, a trend that agencies such as the EIA and IEA have been signaling since the start of the year but which had not been fully visible in official statistics. The main reason was China accumulating crude oil outside the OECD reporting system. This situation, however, is now beginning to shift. Data from recent…

Guanajuato Silver Company (TSXV: GSVR) is looking to raise as much as C$43 million ($31 million) in a bought deal public offering to support its Mexican mine operations. However, its shares dropped nearly 15% on the news. Kodal Minerals (LON: KOD) confirmed on Tuesday that a security guard was killed in an attack on its Bougouni lithium mine in Mali on August 22. The company said assailants on motorcycles targeted the site but were repelled after military forces stationed at the mine engaged them. The attackers fled, but one guard employed by Kodal’s security contractor died at the scene. No other staff or contractors were harmed. Kodal said it is working closely with the Malian government to reinforce protection for employees and contractors. Military security around the site has since been increased. Operations at Bougouni remain unaffected. The mine, which began production i…

Guardian Metal Resources (LSE-A: GMET) is betting two tungsten projects in Nevada can help to revive United States mined supply of the critical metal as China tightens exports and Washington scrambles for alternative sources. Helped by a $6.2 million award from the US Department of Defense under the Defense Production Act Title III program, Guardian is carrying out a pre-feasibility study at its Pilot Mountain project that’s slated for completion in the first half next year. Pilot Mountain, located about 270 km southeast of state capital Carson City, hosts a historical resource. The past-producing Tempiute mine comes with a standing mill building, 3,000-kilowatt s…

Canada has seen a surge in hard rock lithium exploration and development activity following the discovery of Patriot Battery Metals’ globally significant Corvette (CV5) pegmatite in Quebec in 2021, the enactment of the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) which incentivizes “friendshoring” of supply chains, and a rally in global lithium prices that peaked in 2022. A host of feasibility studies emerged between 2023 and 2025, the latest of which Adamas Intelligence benchmarked in this insight. Existing producers of spodumene concentrate include the twice bankrupt and re-capitalized North American Lithium mine in Quebec (a joint venture between Sayona Mining and Piedmont Lit…

The most important day in a few trading months is coming up fast (two days left!). The September FOMC rate decision is part of four quarterly meetings where key economic projections (SEP or Summary of Economic Projections) are published (don't forget the 4 other meetings). They take place in March, June, September and December. These quarterly meetings tend to hold higher weight on potential changes to the FED's tone. With Wednesday's meeting in focus, markets are preparing for a change in tone and changing SEPs. While the decision itself may not surprise (25 bps is heavily priced in and should be the basis except for any surprise), the details in the projections and P…

Guinea has revoked a major bauxite mining concession from Emirates Global Aluminium’s (EGA) local subsidiary and reassigned it to a newly created state-owned company, citing violations of the mining code. The move follows the military government’s termination of the original agreement with Guinea Alumina Corporation (GAC) in July. Exports from the site had been suspended since October due to GAC’s failure to build a promised alumina refinery. Originally due in 2022, the deadline was later pushed to September 30, 2026. The concession has now been transferred to Nimba Mining Company, a state entity that will oversee both bauxite extraction and refinery development, …

Halliburton (NYSE: HAL) announced Monday it has secured a contract for GeoFrame Energy’s geothermal and direct lithium extraction (DLE) project in Texas. The company said it will plan and design the first demonstration phase wells in the Smackover Formation in East Texas. GeoFrame Energy has said it is set to become the first company to deliver battery-grade lithium carbonate from this US reservoir to the market. GeoFrame said the project is expected to produce approximately 83,500 metric tons of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually—enough to meet 100% of domestic demand – which would mark a turning point in ending US dependence on Chinese lithium imports. …
