Overview: Speculation that Japan will take measures to stem the rout in the government bond market has helped spur a short-covering bounce in the dollar after finished last week poorly and sold off yesterday. There has been a sharp drop in Japanese long-term bond yields, and although the dollar is higher against all the G10 currencies today, the yen is the weakest, off nearly 0.75%. Given the intraday momentum indicators and sentiment toward the dollar, we suspect North American participants will sell into the greenback's gains. European benchmark 10-year yields are off 1-3 bp today. The 10-year US Treasury yield is four basis points lower near 4.47%. Equities are mostly…

Japan will begin test mining rare earth rich mud from the deep seabed near Minamitori Island in 2026, aiming to secure a domestic supply of critical minerals amid tightening global exports. The government-backed project, led by Shoichi Ishii of the Cabinet Office’s ocean innovation platform and using pipes deployed by a Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) vessel, marks the world’s first attempt to extract and refine rare earths from abyssal mud. The project will collect mud at depths of 5,000–6,000 m near Minamitori Island, with trial operations set to begin in January 2026, as reported by Reuters. If fully successful, the system co…

The yen showed almost no reaction to news that Japan's economic decline is strengthening Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's resolve to develop an ambitious stimulus package, even though the central bank still intends to raise interest rates in the coming months. According to the data, Japan's real gross domestic product in the third quarter of this year fell by 1.8% year-on-year. Compared to the second quarter, GDP declined by 0.4%. Private residential investment and exports were among the key factors weighing on overall output. This was the fastest pace of growth since Q3 2024, as private consumption was higher, in part due to government subsidies for rice and energy. Overview: The dollar is mixed against the G10 currencies today. Fanned by Japanese official caution about exchange rate developments, and perhaps what seems like a successful between President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi, the dollar is snapping a seven-day advance against the yen. The dollar bloc and sterling are under-performing, while the roughly 1.75% drop in crude prices, the third consecutive declining session, put the Norwegian krone at the bottom of the G10 today. Emerging market currencies are mixed. And despite the stronger yuan, and the PBOC setting the dollar's reference rate at a new one-year low, Asia Pacific currencies were mixed. Equities ar…

Overview: The dollar is mostly consolidating with a softer bias after the disappointing employment report before the weekend. The derivatives market is pricing in about a 10% chance of a 50 bp Fed cut next week, which still seems exaggerated given the likely uptick in headline CPI this week. The Japanese yen is the only G10 currency that is weaker on heels of the resignation of Prime Minister Ishida who saw the surveys that showed a majority of his party wanted a leadership contest this year as a vote of no-confidence. The policy uncertainty weighed on the long-end of the Japanese interest rate, though the 10-year yield slipped and equities rose. Most emerging market curr…

Overview: The market is optimistic a deal will be struck between the US and China tomorrow. A reduction in the fentanyl tariff is expected, and a one-year delay in the broad export licensing requirement for rare earths and related technology has been tipped. Reports suggest China purchased two cargoes of US soy for the first time in months. But it is not clear what concessions the US made. Separately, the US appears to have finalized an agreement with South Korea. Ahead of the outcome of the FOMC meeting later today, the US dollar is firm. The Japanese yen is stepping into the FX spotlight, battling the Australian dollar for top weekly performer — with the AUD lifted by the RBA’s hawkish pause and firm domestic data. A rare sight in 2025, the yen is beginning to dominate broader currency performance, as fundamentals start to assemble in its favor. Political momentum is shifting, with LDP contenders Takaichi and Koizumi pulling ahead in Friday’s LDP party leadership race and hinting at a possible renegotiation of Japan’s trade deal with the US. Both stances, seen as less supportive of Abenomics and Ishibanomics’ era of ultra-low rates, fuel growing speculation that BoJ hikes may be closer than expected. Ec…

Adding to the bad news, the June and May reports were both revised sharply lower, down by a combined 258 thousand. The unemployment rate ticked higher to 4.2%, up from 4.1%.
