US Oil has been consolidating between $65.50 to $70 since the past month war-led volatility calmed down sharply. Markets had earlier been concerned by supply fears which considerably lowered the Energy commodity's prices since 2025. Momentum has turned in June, but no trend has been forming since. Despite some renewed tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine-Russia talks in a limbo, Oil prices haven't elevated much further. The NA session kicks off quietly, with subdued volumes as American traders take the day off, giving markets a breather after yesterday’s upside surprise in the Non-Farm Payrolls and fresh diplomatic updates from the US – More is to come next week as we approach Trump's infamous July 9th deadline With little on the immediate calendar, Oil Traders' attention is turning to tomorrow’s OPEC+ meeting — delayed by a day due to the Ashura holiday. The timing shift may be behind some of today’s selling tone, as market participants hold off ahead of any supply-side headlines. From a price action perspective, crude has been consolidating in a narrow $2 range, showing signs it may …

At the end of the second quarter the MINING.COM TOP 50* ranking of the world’s most valuable miners had a combined market capitalization of just under $1.50 trillion, up a respectable $213 billion so far in 2025. The total stock market valuation of the world’s biggest mining companies remains nearly $250 billion below the all-time high reached three years ago however. The Top 50 also once again underperformed the broader market despite new multi-year highs and record prices for a number of major metals over the last three months. Rare event Since the inception of the Top 50, China Northern Rare Earth has been the only producer of the 17 elements in the rank…

The Japanese yen continues to have a busy week, with strong movement in both directions. In the North American session, USD/JPY is trading at 148.53, up 0.45% on the day. On Wednesday, USD/JPY strengthened to 149.18, its highest level since March. US retail sales surprise with 0.6% gain US retail sales have been in the doldrums of late, posting declines in April and May as consumers reacted with a thumbs-down to President Trump's tariffs, which took effect in April and made imported goods more expensive. Consecutive misses on US data in the North-American Morning Session as the US Services PMI came in at 49.9 vs 52 expected. Equity markets which rallied back after the miss on ADP Data, gapped right back down as Services Data, which has been holding strong throughout Hike cycles and geopolitical certainty is now showing weakness. New Orders, deliveries, production and Employment are contracting while prices are increasing at the highest pace since November 2022. Markets are not pleased with this news as we start to see a shift in PMI data, tariffs are starting to have an impact. Opinions are the authors'; not necessarily that of OANDA Business I…

Institutional money is pouring back into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs at record rates. Bitcoin exchange-traded funds kicked off the week with a combined $217 million in net inflows, while Ether ETFs added another $62.11 million, continuing a strong start to July. BTC ▲0.19% volatility may be on summer break, but with this sort of volume, Q3 and Q4 are set to send many coins to all-time highs. Increasingly, investors are asking: Why wouldn’t the world adopt the Bitcoin standard instead of impotently complaining about the inflation of fiat currencies year after year? Here’s what’s next for the price of Bitcoin: BlackRock’s IBIT Bitcoin ETF Smashes Through 700,000 BTC Accordin…

This morning's ADP release was not enough to trigger large volatility in Markets. The data came in at -33K vs a consensus of 95K, a consequential miss that led to a subdued market reaction. US Equity futures had gone up in the overnight session with the S&P 500 just grazing new all-time highs (6,229 on its CFD) and markets are now correcting, with however a slow but steady grind. ADP Employment measures private employment by US Firms and concerns around 30 millions of Americans , which represents a bit less than 10% of the US Population – Its correlation to the Non-Farm Payrolls data is not significant, a reason why reactions to ADP releases are less accentuated tha…

The US Supreme Court declined on Tuesday to hear an appeal by the Apache Stronghold seeking to block the development of the Resolution Copper mine in Arizona. The mine is a joint venture between Rio Tinto (ASX, LON, NYSE: RIO) and BHP (ASX: BHP). The advocacy group, comprising members of the San Carlos Apache tribe of southeastern Arizona and conservationists, challenged a 2024 lower court decision that permitted a federal land swap allowing the mining companies to acquire land considered sacred by the Apache for the mine project. A federal judge in Arizona had temporarily halted the land transfer on May 9, pending the outcome of the Supreme Court appeal. The …

The US government has launched a new effort to extract valuable critical minerals, including rare earths, lithium, cobalt, and uranium, from mine waste and abandoned sites, aiming to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthen domestic production. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has ordered a series of regulatory changes to streamline federal oversight and fast-track projects recovering minerals from coal refuse, tailings, and shuttered uranium mines. The directive includes updated guidance to make these recovery projects eligible for federal funding and requires faster review timelines for new proposals. It also directs the US Geological Survey to map a…

Overview: The capricious nature of the US tariffs, the tone in which they were announced, while still allowing time (August 1) to negotiate is the main talk. More tariff announcements are expected today. The dollar's upside correction was cut short, and it is weaker against nearly all the world's currencies. The jump in long-end Japanese government bonds (9-15 bp) has not helped the yen, which is the only G10 currency struggling to find traction against the greenback today. Among emerging market currencies, only the Taiwan dollar and Turkish lira are a little softer. Equities have done surprisingly well today, while bonds have been sold. Nearly all the bourses in the Asi…

Overview: The US 35% tariff on Canada and President Trump's threat to have a 15%-20% universal tariff rather than 10% provides today's disruption. A tariff letter for the EU is awaited but seeing how the US treated Canada and Brazil (with whom the US has a trade surplus) warns of the risk to Europe. That said, the full details of the tariff threat on Canada, given the free-trade deal, have not been reported yet. The dollar is firmer against the G10 currencies. The backing up of US rates arguably helped push the yen to the bottom of the leaders' board with a 0.5%-0.6% loss. The Canadian dollar is at a new low for the month and is off about 0.35%. The UK economy unexpectedl…

Overview: While the US dollar is a little softer today against the G10 currencies, it remains mostly within Wednesday's range. The yen is a notable exception. It made a new high for the week despite the contraction in Q1 25 GDP. Most emerging market currencies are firmer. The markets have not reacted to a statement from President Trump that his administration lacks the capacity to negotiate with all the parties so in the next 2-3 weeks, the US will simply set the tariff rates. Asia Pacific equities ended the week on a mixed note. Europe's Stoxx 600 is up about 0.6%, the fourth daily advance this week. US index futures are up about 0.25%. European bonds are rallying. The …

Overview: There is one driver today. The US Court of International Trade ruled against the Trump administration's "Liberation Day" tariffs. The court rules that the 1977 law used to justify the actions did not apply. The ruling also applies to the earlier tariffs on security of the US borders and fentanyl trafficking. The dollar initially rallied but is now more mixed, with the dollar bloc and Scandis firmer on the day. Emerging market currencies have not recovered as well, but after the Russian ruble, the South African rand, Mexican peso, and Chinese yuan are making advances. Equities mostly like the development, but the Trump administration will appeal. Taiwan and Indi…

Rare earths have been in the news lately, with a deal between the United States and China regarding the 17 elements on the Period Table, followed by a plan the Trump administration is developing to prioritize and fund rare earth projects it deems critical to national security. According to a June 12 story by Bloomberg, Officials are discussing using the Defense Production Act to tap financing, loans and other means for rare earths element-related projects, including mining, processing and other downstream technologies to bolster the US’s capability to build a domestic supply chain, the people said. A specific course of action or a timeline have yet to be finalized, th…

Overview: The US and China struck an agreement that would lower tariffs for a 90-day cooling off period. The US tariff on China falls to 30% from 145%, while China's tariff on the US falls to 10% from 125%. A new forum was established to allow recurring discussions on economics and trade. The dollar spiked sharply higher on the news but was quickly sold into the rally, and while it remains sharply higher on the day, it is well off its peak. The Japanese yen is weakest of the G10 currencies, and it is off about in late European morning turnover. The Australian dollar, sometimes treated as a G10 proxy for China, is down the least, less than 0.15%. Most emerging markets in …

Overview: There are five developments to note. First, the US and China will have initial trade talks this weekend in Switzerland. Second, the PBOC cut its key rate by 10 bp and cut reserve requirements by 0.5%. It also announced several other measures to boost lending/relending. Third, German factory orders were stronger than expected, perhaps bolstered by attempts to move ahead of US tariffs. Fourth, after last week’s ruction, most Asian emerging market currencies continued to pullback. The exceptions today were the South Korean won and Philippine peso. Fifth, there has been little market impact from India and Pakistan exchanging strikes. The Indian rupee is weaker (~0.5…

It has been the second day where North Americans see no particular market-moving data after last week's key releases, but this hasn't stopped the session from being volatile. Today has seen some heavy reshuffling in stocks from Tech and Semiconductor Sectors to Healthcare, FInancial and Real Estate sector in what seems to be some closing of positions as we approach the Key earnings releases for some of the biggest names in American Markets: Tesla and Google earnings are awaited tomorrow. The Nasdaq closes down 0.60% and the Dow up 0.40% – Even the Russell 2000 has seen some new flows towards the smaller-cap index in the session. Except for these reshufflings, some furt…

Overview: The US dollar is firm. The only G10 currency that is stronger today is sterling, which is recovering from yesterday's sharp losses and the UK's drama eased following Prime Minister Starmer's support for Chancellor Reeves. Of note most of the final June PMI readings were revised higher from the initial estimates. The US struck a trade agreement with Vietnam, the third deal reached, and the clear intent is to deter it from re-exporting Chinese goods. Meanwhile, the US also lifted export requirement for chip design software sales to China, which would seem to imply that the administration is satisfied with the resumption of rare earth and magnet shipment to the US.…

Overview: The dollar has steadied today after yesterday's jump. Asia and Europe do not seem to be as enthusiastic about the dollar as North America seemed to be yesterday. President Trump indicated that sectoral tariffs on semiconductor chips and pharmaceuticals could be announced as early as August 1. He also said that there will be more bilateral deals announced. The greenback is mostly a little softer against the G10 currencies, with the Scandis the notable exception, unable to find much traction. Emerging market currencies are softer except for central Europe, the Chinese yuan, and the Mexican peso. The PBOC set the dollar's reference rate higher today for the third c…
