In terms of value, the jump was even more impressive: $12.1 billion, an increase in 192% for the previous month. This phenomenon was driven by three main pillars: Institutional Investment (ETFs): For the first time in history, flows to gold ETFs in India ( The total shares of these funds exceeded the symbolic mark of 110 tonnes. Anticipation of Tariffs: Traders and jewelers accelerated purchases to recompose stocks due to uncertainties in global and domestic tariff policies. Cultural Resilience: Despite record prices (which exceeded the $5,400/oz. internationally in January), the appetite for gold as a value reserve and for the wedding season remains unwavering. The Look of the Authorities: Warning or Stability? The Minister of Finance, Nirmala Sitharaman, and the Governor of the RBI, Sanjay Malhotra, confirmed that they are closely monitoring this sudden outbreak of January. Although the trade deficit has jumped to almost $35 billion due to this flow, the government stated that the situation is not yet "alarming", given the robust level of international reserves of India, which also reached records driven by the valuation of the metal itself.
